The Brief

Saffron Court was part of a major social housing led redevelopment in the London Borough of Islington to replace sub-standard units in a phased manner to allow the decanting of residents. The opportunity was to design a new building on a very constrained ‘windfall’ site, which resulted from efficient use of land elsewhere on the estate. The scheme was to contain a mix of private and social housing on the edge of the Canonbury Conservation Area.

The Results

Planning was a challenge due to the proximity of neighbouring buildings, the conservation area and controls on demolition. After much negotiation approval was granted for our designs for 46 one- and two-bedroom apartments.
