Newham invited us, and a few other practices selected for their experience in housing innovation, to put forward designs for a small corner site in East London. The site formed part of a regeneration program to provide social housing. The brief called for a sustainable approach to design, respect for the locality and provision for a mix of home sizes alongside a small element of retail space.
Our design development work showed that the best solution was to put forward a very strong urban form that reinforced the corner position of the site. The scheme used form and colour to move the traditional terrace and ‘block’ of flats into the 21st century. Use of high quality, low maintenance materials, off-site construction and renewable energy meant the project would achieve ‘Code for Sustainable Homes’ level 5.
